Nepalese scientist Shiv Subedi has received the ‘Judge Commendation’ award in The John Maddox Prize 2024, which will be given by the world famous science journal. Subedi was presented with the award at a ceremony held in London on Wednesday.
Subedi was given the award for raising earthquake awareness and earthquake preparedness campaign in Nepal. Subedi has contributed to reduce the risk of earthquakes in Nepal through earthquake education.
Subedi was the only one from a developing country among the 8 scientists nominated for this year’s award. Every year, the award given to different scientists of the world is given in the name of John Maddox. The award is given to a scientist who raises the voice for policy based on evidence obtained from science and scientific research.
Subedi is constantly raising his voice that research, awareness and preparedness for earthquakes in Nepal as well as the government should prepare for it with appropriate policies. Subedi is currently working as a seismologist at Nepal Science and Technology Academy.
Subedi is also active in the field of music. Dozens of songs written by him including ‘Gham Jais Chamkilo Jun Noi’, ‘Bhoomari Parein Pe Ma’, ‘Kin Asi Hoi’, ‘Bhulnai Gayo Dhau’, ‘Baancheko Chu Dhanna’, ‘Naroo Hai Aama’ are popular.
